Meeting Ritual FAQs

We understand you might have questions. To help, we’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions below. Should you have additional questions, please email ritual@pibetaphi.org.

Meeting Ritual was developed in the 1890s to unify us as a sisterhood. We are evolving meeting Ritual to reflect our core values and today’s membership while retaining our purpose of connecting Pi Phis at each meeting.

Pi Beta Phi’s core values continue to anchor us. The evolved meeting Ritual will be carefully aligned with our values and will reflect the inclusive sisterhood that Pi Phi strives to be.

The decision was informed by the Meeting Ritual Research Committee’s report which included historical and religious contexts, member feedback and comparisons to other National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) organizations. In addition to member feedback, Grand Council considered potential financial implications and the purpose of meeting Ritual before deciding to evolve meeting Ritual while preserving its core intent

The decision to evolve meeting Ritual aligns with our goal to remain a strong and welcoming organization, meeting the needs and expectations of current and future members. Every NPC organization evolves at its own pace, based on its unique culture and needs. Some NPC organizations have already adapted their rituals over the years. For Pi Phi, after years of member input and two years of focused study, we have the insights and data to make an informed decision based on where we are today.

This decision was based on the most thorough research we’ve ever conducted, benefiting from broad participation and enhanced data analysis. Grand Council believes the current approach ensures a meeting Ritual that is timeless and inclusive.

The Creed (the portion with statements beginning with "Whatsoever") will not change. It will continue to be used during the closing portion of meeting Ritual, as well as in the Initiation ceremony. The tone and cadence of meeting Ritual, specifically the use of elevated language and reverence will also remain the same. The historical significance of meeting Ritual will remain intact and stand the test of time. The updated language will continue to be simple, short and connect to Pi Beta Phi’s core values without having to explicitly list them. The purpose of meeting Ritual—to create a unified tone for conducting the Fraternity’s business—will remain unchanged. This importance of uniformity aligns with Emma Harper Turner’s original purpose of writing Ritual in the 1890s.

Initiation Ritual is not changing. Our Creed and Initiation Ritual remain foundational to who we are as Pi Beta Phi, and they are universally beloved across our membership. The Creed, in particular, reflects the timeless values that unite us, and it will remain unchanged. We are committed to maintaining the parts of our traditions that resonate with all members while evolving in areas that ensure every sister feels included and connected.
